As the record has been picked up and put on the turntable, the tone arm will be placed on the record.

In the above pictures you'll see the different positions of the gripper arm when playing "odd" and "even" selections, on the end of the arm it shows which side it is playing. This, and the the remark "record playing" on the top of the gripper mechanism, tells which record is playing now.

When the record has ended a bracket will touch the tone arm switch , which will start the same cycle when picking up a record, but in a reversed way.
