... ashes to ashes ...

. . .  or what to take into account when buying a jukebox for restoration . . .

Over the years I've seen jukeboxes on sale in a very bad condition.

This, for example, is a Rock-ola 1454, can you guess the price ?

First take a look inside:Something missing here ?

Rosmalen show 1997, Norman Coster

Well, I'm sorry for you, but this nice jukebox was sold already. Move your mouse over the picture below, and find out about the price:

NLG 4.000 or USD 2.000

Well, this was the price in 1997, but if the buyer would have spent 50% more he would have had the same model, grade 1 restored.

But then of course it's nice to do a restoration yourself of course.
Please take a look with me on the inside of this jukebox:

As you can see there's lot's of things missing.

Speakers, the revolving magazine, and when looking at the prior pictures: glass strips / grilles in front of the speakers, bottom plate turntable, windows, etc, etc . . .
It looks very dirty, but that's not the most import thing, you will be able to clean it.

The worst thing is, you'll probably never find the original parts again, they're just not available anymore. Over the decades there were many people restoring jukeboxes and they used most parts which you are now probably be looking for . . .

Such a box can never be returned into mint condition again.
But, if you like to restore a juke just for fun, go ahead. There are lots of people reproducing the old parts nowadays. And you can use these instead of the original ones with confidence!
But bear in mind that it's easier have a gripper or turntable motor overhauled, than to buy another motor!

Please consult this page if you want to find out about addresses for repro and spare parts !
